Can a UAE teacher get health insurance that also covers dependents (husband + 1 child)?

Finance
I work for a private school in Sharjah under GEMS network. My employer provides health insurance for me but when I asked about adding my husband and daughter (age 7) on the policy they said it's extra and I need to pay from my pocket. Cost quoted was AED 4,200/year for both. Is this normal? Or is there a cheaper standalone insurance I can get for them? They're both in Sri Lanka currently but planning to bring them to UAE by June.

AED 4,200 for two dependents is actually quite reasonable — that's about AED 2,100 per person per year which is around the minimum mandated coverage level in Dubai/Sharjah. You won't find anything legal and comprehensive cheaper than that, so I'd say grab it through your employer group policy. Standalone policies from companies like AXA, Daman, or Neuron can sometimes be slightly cheaper but don't have the group negotiated rates. The employer route is usually best value for basic coverage.

Thank you everyone! I went with the employer group plan — AED 4,200 for both. My HR was actually very helpful once I showed them I was sponsoring them. The insurance card will be ready within 2 weeks and I can file for their visa soon after. Excited to finally have my family here! 😊

As a nurse I deal with insurance every day. The AED 4,200 quote for two is actually a good price if it's the Daman Saada (enhanced) plan or equivalent. For a 7-year-old child with no pre-existing conditions, child-only insurance in Sharjah can be as low as AED 700-900/year standalone. Your husband would be more expensive. One tip: ask HR if there's an 'enhanced cover' option — some GEMS schools let you upgrade the family coverage at subsidised group rates. Worth asking!

I'm in Bahrain but similar situation. My advice: don't wait until June to sort this out. UAE requires health insurance for residency visa sponsorship, so your husband and daughter can't get their residency stamped without valid insurance in place. Sort it before you file for their visas — your employer or an insurance broker can do the paperwork together.
