What is the lifestyle really like for a pharmacist in Saudi Aramco vs private hospital?
JobsI'm a pharmacist currently working at Saudi Aramco Medical Centre in Dhahran (Eastern Province). My package is decent — SAR 12,500 basic + housing in Aramco compound + transport + 30 days annual leave.
I'm getting an offer from a private hospital in Riyadh offering SAR 9,500 basic but in a city apartment with SAR 2,000 housing allowance.
Money-wise the Aramco package seems better. But what about lifestyle? Aramco compound is very secure, Western-style. Is the Riyadh private hospital lifestyle very different for a Sri Lankan female pharmacist? Is it safe? Social life?
Anyone who has moved between the two, please share honestly.

I'm a nurse (not pharmacist) but very similar situation. My strong opinion: stay with Aramco. The total compensation package (housing, transport, annual flights home, end-of-service benefits) is much more valuable than you might calculate upfront. Aramco's end-of-service for long-term employees is exceptional.
Also, pharmacist career growth at Aramco Medical is structured and has clear levels. Private hospitals in Saudi can be less organised — overtime without pay, shift changes with no notice, etc.
That said, Riyadh is genuinely fun now if lifestyle is a priority. Tough call!

Staying at Aramco. When I calculated the full package properly as Ayasha advised — Aramco compound housing equivalent + 2 flights home/year + superior end-of-service — I'm actually SAR 4,000–5,000/month better off staying. The Riyadh offer sounded attractive but it's genuinely not. Thank you all for the rational breakdown! 🙏

I've been in Saudi 12 years (civil engineering, not pharma) but I know the compound vs city living debate very well. Honest take:
**Aramco Compound (Dhahran):**
- Very Western, relaxed rules — women drive freely, there's a cinema, golf course, swimming pools
- Community is international and friendly
- Pharmacists in Aramco medical are well-regarded, good work-life balance
- Social life is excellent within compound
- You barely feel like you're in Saudi — which some people love, some find a bubble
**Riyadh Private (city apartment):**
- Modern Riyadh has changed enormously since 2017 Vision 2030 — Saudi females drive, concerts, cinemas, malls
- Still more conservative than compound but much more open than 5 years ago
- Your SAR 9,500 + SAR 2,000 housing = SAR 11,500 total which is actually close to Aramco in cost of living terms
- Social scene in Riyadh for expats is vibrant — lots of expat communities, Sri Lankan associations, restaurants
For a Sri Lankan female professional, both are very safe. Saudi cities have extremely low crime.

HR perspective here: when comparing two offers, always calculate the TOTAL PACKAGE including:
1. Basic salary
2. Housing (actual value, not allowance if compound)
3. Annual flight tickets home (how many per year?)
4. Annual leave (30 days Aramco is generous)
5. End-of-service gratuity calculation
6. Medical/insurance quality
7. Overtime/on-call compensation
Run the full numbers, not just basic salary. Aramco compounds housing alone is worth SAR 3,000–5,000/month in equivalent Riyadh rent.
