Bahrain's Golden Residency — who qualifies? Is it worth applying for long-term Sri Lankan expats?

Visa
I've been in Bahrain 7 years as a marketing professional. I heard Bahrain launched a 'Golden Residency' or long-term visa for expats that don't require a sponsor. Who qualifies? I think there are property purchase, salary, or retiree categories? My salary is BHD 1,800/month. I own a car but not property in Bahrain. Is there a path for someone like me?

Bahrain Premium Residency — here's what I know as of 2024–2025: **Category 1: Property Purchase** - Own property worth BHD 50,000+ (freehold areas only) - 10-year renewable residency, no sponsor needed - Can include spouse and dependents **Category 2: High Salary** - Salary of BHD 2,000+ per month from a stable employer - Provides 5-year renewable residency - At BHD 1,800 you're close but just under the threshold **Category 3: Retired Expat** - 45+ years old, pension/savings of BHD 50,000+ **Category 4: Self-sufficient wealthy** - Bank balance BHD 500,000+ (clearly not the mass market option) At BHD 1,800 salary: You're close to the salary category threshold. Some reports say they're flexible for established professionals. Worth consulting a Bahrain PRO or immigration lawyer — the official portal is ekey.bahrain.bh.

For me the benefit would be: if my company ever downsizes I don't immediately become illegal. Normal work visa = tied to employer, if you lose job you have 30 days to leave or find new sponsor. Premium residency = stays with you independent of employer. After 7 years in Bahrain, this stability is valuable. Also it signals to Bahrain that you're a long-term contributor not just a transient worker.

Similar concept to Kuwait's long-term residence which is very restricted (only for specific professions). I've always thought Bahrain is actually the most expat-friendly GCC country in terms of long-term settlement options. Qatar now has something similar. UAE Golden Visa is the most famous. Whoever has been 5+ years in Bahrain should seriously explore this.

Is the Bahrain premium residency actually worth it compared to just renewing the normal work visa every 2 years? The process sounds expensive and complicated for someone without property.
