How to open a bank account in Kuwait as a new expat worker?
FinanceI just arrived in Kuwait one week ago. My Civil ID is being processed (employer says it takes 2 more weeks). My salary will be paid to a bank account but I don't have one yet. My employer is saying I need a Civil ID to open an account but the Civil ID needs the account...?
Also, which bank is best for Sri Lankans? Easy money transfer to Sri Lanka is important for me.

Welcome to Kuwait! The Civil ID — bank account chicken-and-egg issue is very common for newcomers. Here's how to handle it:
FOR SALARY: Your employer can pay your first month's salary in cash OR hold it until your account is ready. Ask them to hold it (don't let it disappear into their system).
OPENING A BANK ACCOUNT:
Most Kuwait banks require a Civil ID. However:
• National Bank of Kuwait (NBK) and Kuwait Finance House (KFH) sometimes allow new accounts with just a passport + employment contract + a letter from employer. Ask specifically.
• Your employer's HR may have a relationship with a bank — ask them to help facilitate.
BEST BANKS FOR REMITTANCE:
1. Al-Ahli Bank of Kuwait — very Sri Lankan-friendly, has direct remittance deals
2. National Bank of Kuwait (NBK) — great rates, reliable
3. Kuwait Finance House (KFH) — for Muslim Sri Lankans, Islamic banking
4. Al Ahli United Bank — good exchange rates
For remittances: Al Muzaini Exchange, Kuwait Finance House Exchange are very popular with Sri Lankans — competitive rates to LKR.

Update: I managed to open an account at NBK with my passport, employment contract, and a letter from my employer. They gave me a pre-Civil ID account with limited features. Once my Civil ID came, they upgraded it. The whole process took about 3 weeks total.
