Bahrain Flexi Permit — worth it for an IT freelancer? Anyone with real experience?

Business
I'm a software developer currently in Bahrain on a company employment visa. I'm thinking of going independent as a freelancer since I have several clients who want to hire me directly. The Bahrain Flexi Permit seems perfect but I have questions: 1. Is BHD 450/year for the permit the only cost or are there hidden fees? 2. Can I invoice international clients and get paid in foreign currency? 3. What about health insurance? 4. Can my family stay on dependent visa if I have a Flexi Permit?

I have a colleague on the Flexi Permit in Bahrain — here's the real deal: 1. COSTS: BHD 450/year is the main permit fee. Additionally: - Health insurance: You need to arrange your own (BHD 150-300/year for basic) - Trade name/commercial registration: Optional (BHD 50-100 if you want formal invoicing) - Total annual cost: ~BHD 650-800 2. INTERNATIONAL CLIENTS: YES absolutely. You can open a bank account in Bahrain and receive SWIFT transfers in USD/GBP/EUR. Bahrain has no capital controls. Very expat-friendly banking (Ahli United Bank, BBK are good). However, you may want a formal structure (CR) for larger invoices. 3. HEALTH INSURANCE: NOT included. You must purchase independently. Required for residency renewal too. 4. FAMILY DEPENDENT VISA: Yes! The Flexi Permit holder can sponsor dependents same as regular employed expats, AS LONG as you meet the income requirement (BHD 300+/month — easily met if you're in IT). Overall verdict from my colleague: BEST permit for freelancers in GCC. Much better than trying to do the same in UAE or Qatar where it's much more complex and expensive.

UPDATE: I switched to Flexi Permit 3 months ago. Confirming everything above is accurate. Process took 2 weeks through LMRA website. The freedom is amazing — I'm earning 40% more than on salary and working with clients in UK, Germany, and UAE. Highly recommend for any IT professionals in Bahrain.
