Overview
The Kingdom of Bahrain is the smallest of the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, comprising a main island and 32 smaller islands in the Arabian Gulf. Despite its size, Bahrain punches well above its weight as a financial hub and has the most liberal social environment in the GCC.
MANAMA — THE CAPITAL
Manama is the capital and largest city. The area called Adliya is known for its restaurants, galleries, and nightlife — relatively rare in the Gulf. The famous Bahrain Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a must-visit.
ECONOMY
Bahrain was the first Gulf state to discover oil (1932) and has subsequently diversified more than its neighbors. Key sectors: banking & finance (DIFC equivalent — BFHB), aluminium production (ALBA), manufacturing, tourism, and logistics. Many international banks have MENA headquarters here.
