Overview

The Kingdom of Bahrain is the smallest of the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, comprising a main island and 32 smaller islands in the Arabian Gulf. Despite its size, Bahrain punches well above its weight as a financial hub and has the most liberal social environment in the GCC. MANAMA — THE CAPITAL Manama is the capital and largest city. The area called Adliya is known for its restaurants, galleries, and nightlife — relatively rare in the Gulf. The famous Bahrain Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a must-visit. ECONOMY Bahrain was the first Gulf state to discover oil (1932) and has subsequently diversified more than its neighbors. Key sectors: banking & finance (DIFC equivalent — BFHB), aluminium production (ALBA), manufacturing, tourism, and logistics. Many international banks have MENA headquarters here. WHY SRI LANKANS CHOOSE BAHRAIN • Bahrain Flexi Permit — work without a specific employer sponsor (unique in GCC) • More relaxed social environment • Very close to Saudi Arabia (King Fahd Causeway) • Affordable living • No income tax • Strong SL community (~90,000) • Regular flights from Colombo via Gulf Air and others CLIMATE Hot desert climate, similar to UAE. Sea breeze moderates humidity somewhat. Best months: Nov–Mar.
