What are the exact medical fitness test requirements in Qatar? I start work in 2 weeks.

I'm a nurse coming to work at Hamad Medical Corporation in Doha. My employer told me I need to pass a medical fitness test. What exactly do they check? Are there any diseases that will automatically disqualify me? I'm healthy as far as I know but I'm a bit nervous.

Also, can I do the test in Sri Lanka before I arrive or must it be done in Qatar?

Hi! I went through this when I came to HMC two years ago. The Qatar medical fitness test checks:

REQUIRED TESTS:
• Blood tests — HIV (will disqualify), Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Syphilis (VDRL)
• Chest X-ray — primarily for Tuberculosis (TB)
• General physical examination

DISQUALIFYING CONDITIONS:
• HIV/AIDS — unfortunately will result in deportation
• Active Tuberculosis — requires treatment before re-application
• Certain other infectious diseases

GOOD NEWS FOR NURSES:
HMC specifically has a comprehensive medical screening for healthcare workers which may include more tests (Hep B immune status, etc.) — this is standard for healthcare employment globally.

You MUST do it in Qatar, not Sri Lanka. Do a pre-travel general health check in SL for your own peace of mind but the official one must be done at QMSD (Qatar Medical Screening Directorate) or approved centers in Qatar.

Cost: Approx QAR 250-400. Your employer (HMC) should cover this or reimburse — check your contract.

Same system in Oman. One thing to add — when you go for the test, take your original passport, Qatar ID application form, and 2 passport photos. The waiting time can be 1-2 hours at the government center.

For nursing specifically, HMC will also verify your Sri Lanka Nursing Council registration — make sure all your credentials are properly attested (by MOFA Sri Lanka, then Qatar Embassy in Colombo) before you leave.
