Work Culture

WORK CULTURE IN OMAN WORKING HOURS • Sunday–Thursday (standard work week) • Government: 7:30AM–2:30PM • Private sector: 8AM–5PM or 9AM–6PM (40–48 hrs/week) • Friday is the Holy Day; most businesses are closed OMANI VALUES Omanis are known throughout the Gulf for being gentle, patient, and genuinely welcoming to foreigners. The concept of 'Ibadism' (a moderate form of Islam) influences the relatively tolerant culture. Disputes tend to be resolved diplomatically. HIERARCHY AND RESPECT • Senior employees are addressed respectfully (Mr/Mrs or title + first name) • Decision-making can be slow — patience is a virtue • Wasta (connections) plays a role but less aggressively than in some countries • Being genuine and trustworthy is highly valued by Omanis RAMADAN • Working hours reduced to 6 hrs/day • Very respectful observance; non-Muslims should be discreet about eating/drinking • Pace slows dramatically — use this time to build relationships DRESS CODE • Men: Smart casual to formal; thobes not required for non-Omanis • Women: Modest clothing; shoulders and knees covered; abaya not mandatory • Outside Muscat/Salalah, dress more conservatively SAFETY & STABILITY Oman is considered the safest country in the Middle East. Crime rates are extremely low. Political situation is stable. As an expat worker, you'll feel very safe day and night.
